Got back from the Tiny Charter on Sunday, this is a 4 day trip off-shore. I came back with some nice Yellowtail and this one got me 3rd place in the jackpot at 22.8lbs. Thanks to Bill Roecker for the great photo (fishingVideos.com) I will post a complete report later.

Report from Castro's 7-15-2011

Well here is the report from the weekend trip. Went down there Friday and came back Sunday. We left Friday around noon and picked up a buddy in Rosarita and then drove the rest of the way down (80 KM) the road was much better than the past with a few spots getting improved still and looks of many more changes to come. The road to the camp is all new to the town and the dirt part the last few miles was not bad. LOOK OUT for the speed bumps in town, they feel 3ft tall. Once we got the the camp things are the same and hasn't changed, get the big cabins if you want a little more room, make sure you take a fan to stay cooler. We got our boat in the morning and had capt. Jorge And he speaks good english and knows how to fish. He took us just out of the camp and we looked for the WSB but no luck. We then started catching some nice bottom fish till 10AM, then made a move north for 1 hour and did well on the bottom fish till 3pm and then headed back. Came in with a full cooler of fish that included Sheaphead and Lind and Reds. Cooked some BBQ and BS with some buddies. Next day we stayed close and on a smoother bottom and did great, Sean scored a couple of great Calico's on a Luganus Jigs. I was working a large Chrome Crock with a little squid. Still no WSB but they are there, just could not get them to bite. Headed back around 3pm and made it back by 10 with the crossing at Otay with a little delay with 2nd inspection, had some eggs in the cooler...

Over all had a great time, go on down and have some fun, for less than $200 for 2 day of fishing you can't beat it. More guys less money per. The boats are $200 a day for 5 fishermen and the big cabins are $60 a day. Fish cleaning is $10 to $15 and tip the Capt if he puts you the fish. By no means is it a resort, but it is Clean and they treat you right. Safe and easy to get there with better roads. Middle of the week it is cheaper as well.

In Memoriam: Roger Windeler Roger Windeler

Roger Windeler, 70, passed away suddenly on August 17, 2010. Roger was born on June 8, 1940 in Patterson, New Jersey, the third of four children born to August “Gus” and Marie Windeler.

During his youth, he was actively involved in the Boys Scouts of America, achieving the honor of Eagle Scout. In 1960, he joined the U.S. Coast Guard. His tour included service in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba during the Bay of Pigs Invasion in 1961, though he spent the majority of his service in the North Atlantic before his discharge in 1965.

He married Ruth DeGraff on May 18, 1963 and had three daughters. He received his Bachelor’s Degree in 1976 and his Master’s Degree in 1978 from Fairleigh Dickinson University, both while working full time and raising his family.

In 1979, he moved the family to Agoura, California. He retired in 2000. He and Ruth moved to Canyon Lake later that year, following the lead of their youngest daughter. Ever one to be involved, Roger served on the Canyon Lake POA Board, were he prided himself for being fiscally conservative and logical.

During his life, Roger served as a Jaycee JCI Senator, was a volunteer fireman, Elk, founding member of Oak Park High School Booster Club and was most recently a substitute teacher in the Lake Elsinore district.

He enjoyed deep sea fishing, was a life-long and avid New York “football” Giants fan, loved gardening, stamp collecting and, of course, playing poker. For his recent 70th birthday, his family paid his admission into a poker tourney in Las Vegas, where he made the final table.

Roger is survived by his wife of 47 years, Ruth; daughters and sons-in-law, Wendy and Britt Stanley of Santa Maria, Heidi and Steve Howe of Canyon Lake and Amy and George Gerrard of Canyon Lake; six grandchildren, Johanna and Cameron Stanley, Bailey and Parker Howe and Geordie and Austin Gerrard; brother, August “Augie”, and sister, Nora. He was preceded in death by his parents and oldest brother Fred.

Services will be held at Miller-Jones Mortuary, 26770 Murrieta Rd. in Sun City tomorrow, August 21, at 3 p.m., with a reception to follow. A viewing will be held today, August 20, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the mortuary.

I am sad to report this, but a good friend that I had the pleasure of fishing with has passed away. Tiny (Roger Windele) passed away Tues. I will post details on services or how to pay your respect as soon as I know. But he was a great man and always fun to fish with. If you ever went on a Tiny Charter, your first trip you would get a nick name, if not you didn't come on the next trip. Most of the nicknames came at the end of the trip and always stuck with you. To be honest most of the guys on the trip, I don't remember their real names just the nick names.. So this is Panic saying we will miss the Big Man - Tiny -

Planning 2010 Fishing Trips

Well I am looking at a few trips this year and would like to add anyone to the list. The first trip will be in June.

1. Vagabond - 5 days - Tuna - Yellowtail - Rock Cod - Cedros Island and offshore fishing.
Sat June 12, '10 11 AM Leaves and returns on June 17 PM. Great time, a wide variety of fishing and your first shot at Tuna.

2.A 4th of July Special on the Vagabond - 3/4 day and fireworks in the San Diego Bay. Call the Vagabond office for details, limited load. Let them know Cool Tuna told you about it.

3. July 7th - Baja run down to Castro's Fish Camp. - Contact me direct on this one, Limit space and travel needs to be planned in advance.

4. Summer Tuna - Waiting for the fish to show but, at least 2 - 1 1/2 day trips are open and will advise when the plan is set. Boat and date are open.

5. Long Range trip for this year will be - Vagabond Oct 9th - 8days to Alijos Rocks - Limited load - 22 people. Book now so you don't get left On The Docks..

Looking forward to Fred Hall this year in Long Bch and Del Mar.

Long-range fishing pioneer and legendary figure Bill Poole has died

October 22, 2009 | 11:50 am

Bill Poole, one of the leading pioneers of San Diego's sportfishing industry and a legendary figure in the saltwater fishing community, died Wednesday night after a lengthy bout with lung cancer. He was 87.
Poole, a prolific boat builder and iconic captain, started with a barge after World War II and either built or had a hand in the construction of many of the San Diego-based long-range vessels that comprise the world's largest and most sophisticated sportfishing fleet.
Among those still operating are the Royal Polaris, Polaris Supreme, Holiday, American Angler, Searcher and the Royal Star.
Poole, who was actively fishing last year, was famously quoted as saying, "It doesn't matter how much money you make, how many cars you drive or how expensive your house is -- when you step onto a boat to fish, the fish don't give a damn."
His passing leaves a deep void in the Southern California saltwater fishing community and especially in San Diego.
Said Bob Fletcher, a former captain and longtime president of the Sportfishing Assn. of California: "We lost one of the real monster pioneers in sportfishing last night. I've known him for most of my life and nobody else had that kind of impact on our industry."
Poole co-owned Fisherman's Landing, from where many of the vessels he built still run. Paul Morris, general manager of the landing, added: "I've worked with him for 42 years and he was like a father to me. He was one of these guys who would talk to the employees like they were one of the guys. He treated them like they were part of the group."
A memorial service for Poole is tentatively scheduled for Nov. 25.

The Situation

At its upcoming October 20-22 meeting, the Blue Ribbon Task Force (BRTF) is scheduled to vote on which marine protected area (MPA) proposal to recommend for the South Coast under the state's Marine Life Protection Act (MLPA). The Partnership for Sustainable Oceans (PSO), which represents the interests of recreational anglers and boaters, is supporting Proposal 2 for the South Coast. Proposal 2 places MPAs in locations with a high level of conservation while minimizing the economic impact on local communities and still allows anglers maximum access to fishing. It is the only proposal that truly reflects the spirit of conservation.

Heck, even the albacore have all been nice sized fish this year so please bring your very best tackle with brand new line. Please do not go under gunned.

Had a great time last week, went out Sunday night for a 2 day trip on the Vagabond out of Point Loma. We departed Sunday evening with the Shimano Reps and the Vagabond Crew ending south for the tuna grounds. After driving all night we started in the zone at grey light and put a few small Yellow Fin on the boat right away, but new that bigger fish where still south of us so we motored on down. By 9am we started finding better fish and some Yellowtail and Blue Fin. By lunch time we had some bigger fish on the boat and came into the prime zone. We had a few guys from out of town and was glad Shimano was supplying the boat gear with rods and reels. By afternoon we had some good numbers on all types.We came across some finned whales working a bait ball and the tuna boiling on them as well, it was a site to see nature at work like that. Some nice big Blues and even a few Dodo's. The day ended with some nice fish and we fished until it was dark.
We made a move back up the line that night and started fishing at first light. Came on a few paddies and picked up some nice Yellowtails. Trolled for a while and hit a few more paddies and the headed home. The crew sorted the fish and we found the 1st and 2nd place jackpot fish, it was close with only a pound separating 5 big fish, with Blues taking the top spots in the 30-40lb range. We even had a youngster on board that got his first Tuna and 2nd and 3rd and so on.. But he stepped up after much talking and ate the heart from his first Tuna.. Great sport Shimano delivered with some great prizes as well and we all had a great time on the trip..

Got back Thursday 6/18 from a great trip on the Vagabond. We fished the outside for tuna and then went in-shore to Cedros Island for the Big Mean Yellows. Had a great time with a great bunch of really good fisherman and crew.. We ended the trip going back outside for the tuna again and I end ed up with a nice Yellowfin Tuna, photos are up on my site - www.onecooltuna.com and I am working on a video as well from the trip. Well it is On.. Mike was at the start of the 5 day to Cedros (same one I was on last year) and hooked up on Albacore and Blue Fin 116 miles south

Boat report - 5-16-2009

May 16, 2008 It's is On!!!! Made a really nice little stop on the 1st morning of our 5-day trip and are celebrating the first Albacore catch of the season at about easy day and 1/2 range. John Humphries claimed the first at 24.5 lbs on the troll and Gerald Gaughen caught the first baitfish, a 19.5-lb Albie. Next came Calvin Kumamoto with a 19.9-lb Bluefin on the troll. Beautiful water and weather conditions. We are now heading down to the islands and will report more later.
It is time to go fishing!!!!

But it turned in to a featured film, the total was 45 min. and I can't post something that lond to the web. 10 Day Vagabond - Cow Town - Yellowfin Tuna

Here are the photos and report from the 10 day trip on the Vagabond.

I did not get my cow (yellowfin over 200lb.) but had a great time and we did put fish on the boat over 200lb.

jackpot was John with 297lb (over 300 out of the water)
Kurt with 285lb and Mike T. with 246lb.

It was a great trip and I shot way too many photos and video this time as well.

2 days and Counting - 10day Vagabond Cow City Trip

Well I am going a little crazy getting everything ready to go.. Friday can't get here soon enough, tackle bag, check, rods, check, reels, check, misc.stuff, check, check, check..... I know I will forget something or take to much of other stuff. But I am going!!!!!

10 days of fishing for Yellowtail, Yellowfin Tuna, Wahoo, Dodos and what ever else we can find, but we are going for the Cows (yellowfin Tuna over 200lb.) This is the last trip of the season for the Vagabond and the crew, so it is no holds bar for the big fish and the best fishing. There will be 3 people I know on this trip and have fished with before, so that will help my chances of getting what I am looking for- A COW....

I will return on 12-8 and will post a complete report then. Check for update for on board from Capt. Mike..

1 1/2 days on the Q105 - No Fish

Well with the bite going off for the last 2 weeks, I figured it was time to get out there and help myself to some of the easy pickings.... WRONG... It started out good, got down to the docks Firday night with my fishing buddy "Big D" and we talked with a lot of people going out as well on 1 day and 2 day trips and the mode was high on getting into a epic bite. The counts had been down for the last couple of days but that means it time for the bite to start up again... I was Hoping.. Well we headed out around 9:30pm and headed south about 100 miles and would be in the zone around grey light. Had a boat meeting with Tim and then a talk from Dave Clark from 976-TUNA and most of us entered the raffle for a trip on the Q105 next year, all for a good cause.. Thanks for the T-shirts Dave. :-)

The morning started out slow but we had a few bites on the troll, then we stopped on a paddy and picked off a few rat size Yellowtails, a few where kept, but most where tossed back for next year..

We then trolled the rest of the day and stopped on a some good meter marks but just could not get the fish to bite.. I think we have caught all the stupid fish.. It was bound to happen some day..

Came in to some nice dolphin schools with tuna under them but there was no way to get the fish to boil..

Fished until we could not see the lines and started home.. The fish count was to low to post but we did have a jackpot winner. Winner photos is at the top of this post..

The trip was a nice boat ride for most of us, great boat, great crew, the skipper did all he could to put us on fish, but he can't make the bite the hooks.. Better luck next time..

Tiny's 4 Day on the Vagabond 2008

Well it took me a while to get caught up on things and go over all the pictures from the trip. So here you go, we all had a great time , with some great fishing. The jokes where great and the drinking was on as well. The new members all made it back to shore, we issued a few new nicknames as well.

Ok, it is getting close, the 4 day trip on the Vagabond with Tiny's group is leaving Wed. 7/30.. The Albies have been slowing down a little but the warmer water fish like DoDos and Yellowfin and Big Eyes have been replacing them. So it could be a big varierty trip this time. So you only have this weekend to get that new line on the reels and the rods cleaned up. Make sure all the hooks are in the bag and you have picked out the best feathers for the troll. Get the sun screen packed and make sure you have packed the cigars for the jackpot fish.. Got any good jokes or dirty stories?? Remember to bring cash for the poker game and to tip the crew.. I hope Mike has stocked up the cooler with beer and Dr.Pepper..

One Cool Tuna - Panic

1.5 day trip on the Vagabond 4th of July

Well headed out on the 4th for a day and a half of fishing for the Albacore Tuna. Started out smooth sailing with a great sunset. But by the morning thing had gotten a little rough on the water and the wind had come as well, this made the fishing tough. We found the fish but could not get them to bite as often as we had hope. We had a few highlights with DJ getting his first Albacore and as tradition calls, he ate the heart. (so I didn't get a picture of that) But as the fishing was a little scratch, I did not take may photos, I take more pictures when I catch fish. I was able to take a few at the end of the trip of the catch for the ones that where lucky enough to catch some. I was limited to the one but some caught singles as well and a few doubles. DJ with 3.. Most of fish where on the troll with a few being bait fish. Blake won the jackpot with his prize fish 27.5lb. Thanks to the crew of the Vagabond who as always make the best of the trip, they served up a great steak dinner (Dan can cook) for the ride home. Gordy was a great capt, and the rest of the crew did a great job helping all. Fish total of 26 Albies and one yellowtail.

Just got in from 5 days on the Vagabond out of San Diego, cruised down the coast 300 miles to the Cedros Islands. Had a great time and spent 5 days fishing for the big Yellowtails and rockcods. These fish down there are big and will put the hurt on you. We limited out on the yellows and did great on the Rockcods. Please check out my photos at:

5 Day Trip to Cedros Island - Vagabond

Looking for 5 spots to fill on the Vagabond Sportfishing. This will be a trip leaving 5/16 at 7PM and fishing for 5 days and returning 5/21 that will be a Friday to Wed. trip. The cost is $1095.00 and includes the meals and permits. No fuel charge yet, but that could change. We will be heading down the coast to Benitos/Cedros Isle area and trageting Yellowtail and rock fish. This is a great area and I have fished it before, with great luck on Giant Yellowtails in the 30lb.+ range. They love to put up a great fight down there. Please contact me at bentrods@gmail.com ASAP. Openings on the Tiny Charter - 7/30/08

We have some opening on my July trip if you know anyone that would like to join us. It is a trip I have been taking for years with the same group of guys. Great time for Tuna and anything else that is off-shore that time of the year in San Diego waters. Albacore, Blue Fins, Yellow Fins, Yellowtails and Dodo's. You get 4 days of fishing on this trip, because we normally stop on the way out or get on fish the first day if they are close.

July 30th to Aug. 3rd - 4 days leave by noon on the 30th, back in on the 3rd in the AM.
$1325 per person limited load (22)
Food and permits included (No Fuel Charger yet but could if cost goes up to much)

Royal Polaris Returns from a 10day - Tuna

Went down to the Docks last Sunday AM and caught the group unloading from a 10 day trip. Found this special guy with a shaved head and found out he said "If I get a fish over 100lb I will shave my head" well you guessed it.. He got a 190lb YFT (Yellow Fin Tuna) Zack is 13 and only weights 90lb himself. But what a fish. Check out all my pictures on my Smugmug link. Just click on the photo above. El Gato Dos 6 pack

Went out last weekend on a local boat, the El Gato Dos out of Seaforth Landing. This is a nice 6pack that I had always seen but never been on. Check another boat off the list. Great boat and great crew. Brian (Capt) and John (1st Mate) did a great job putting us on the fish and working hard to find us fish. Started out early, left the dock at 4AM to make the rock pile just south of the islands. But everyone else had the same idea for a Sat. morning. Counted more than 50+ boats. But still got 4 yellows and some nice Cudas. But the bite shut down early with all the preasure, so we moved due west to see if we could find a few paddies. About 5 -6 miles west of the islands we came on a 200lb Marlin and got him to chase the jiggs. He hit one and the battle was on, for about 30 seconds... This guy had plans on going south and he spooled me in before I had a chance to even pull on him. The reel was straight mono and he was taking it all. He gave us a few parting jumps with the jigg hanging out the side of the bill as he headed south. Note to Brian, one word "Spectra".... We moved on and came across a few large whales and metered some fish deep, but could not get them to come up and play. Headed back toward the islands to see if we could find the yellows in the middle ground. On the way back we spotted a small paddy and trolled by with a large yellow hitting the Marlin jigg. He put up a good fight and came in at 23.8lb. tried a few other paddies with mixed results, hooked up but the broke off in the paddy on us. So it was close to 2PM and stopped a few more spots but could not find anyone who wanted to play and we called it a day. Total for the gang was 5 Yellowtails and 4 Cudas, 1 Marlin hook-up.

Back from Castro's - 2 days of fun and fishing

Well got back from Castro's Sunday night, the boarder crossing was helllllll.... 4 hours in line to get across... Note to self...Don't come back on Sunday again.... Well got out of town on Friday afternoon, picked up new friends Jim and Dillon and headed out for the weekend.

Arrived at Castro's about 7pm and got settled in with a little dinner and set up the rigs for the morning. Planned on having 8 total but found out late that 2 had been a no show. So 6 people and 2 boats would have to work. No problem, had Oscar booked on day one and was ready to go hunt down the White Seabass (WSB). Got up at 5 AM and headed out at 7AM. We started out making bait and hit a few boils but only hooked a couple of young WSB about 1-3Lb. Heard a report that they were biting south at Colonet and made a B-line down the coast. Spotted lots of bait balls and some boils but could not get a bite. Started working on the bottom and started to fill up the cooler fast with Reds and Lings as well as the assorted rock cod. Even hooked up on a 4ft Thresher but only had it on 25lb test and could not get it in the boat before the line was cut. We still had a great time and worked the area hard. Made a few stops on the way back up the coast but still could not get the WSB or Yellows to bite. I did manage the big fish of the day, a 11lb Ling, that was fun. Back at the camp we did see another party had landed 2

WSB, one was 34lb and the other was 42lb. So they are down there we just could not find the hungry ones. We did make plans to out on Sunday as well and we hoped for the chance to get our target then.

Day 2 - Got up at daylight and headed out with Pancho and headed south as well. Bait was not as thick this morning and Pancho did not have a bait well to hold them in, so it was catch re-pin them on and re-cast them out. We did see our prize once, as we were cruising along this 40-50lb WSB was just swimming along side of us. He had to be on more than 4 ft down and 4 ft out from the boat. As we stopped for him, he turned and burned and that was it. Did spot more life but only could manage bottom fish that morning. Still had a good time as always down at Castro's. Our other boat did better, Daryle and Ellis and Miguel managed to get a Thresher as well as a 13lb Ling and a Bonita as well as the assortment of Rock Cods.

So between the 6 of us we filled 2- 100 gallon coolers with cleaned fish and headed out of town by 4pm for the drive home. Should have left earlier, but the 3 hour drive took 8 hours instead. Line at the tolls and did not get to TJ until 8 and then had to go to the Otay broader to cross back into the US. 4 hours in line, did not get back home till midnight. The trip recap was:

Oscar is the best capt down there.

WSB are the hard ones to catch, but they are down there.

Make sure your foot is on the tire before you get out of the boat... Ouchhh ..

Don't leave on Sunday, stay the extra day and take your time going back on Monday.

Heading South of the Boarder this weekend

Going down to Castro's Fish Camp, it is a fun little spot just south of Ensenada in Baja. Great rock fish and WSB and Yellowtail sometimes. I am hoping to get on some of the big WSB (White Sea Bass) if you don't know the code.. Last year I got my first one down ther around the same time. But they are know as the "Ghost". I will give an update when I return, there are photos from other trips to Castro on my Webshot site, check out the other links.

Tiny's 4 days of Hell on the Vagabond

Well went out on the yearly trip, 4 days with the Tiny's Fishing Group. This was one for the books, saw so many fish and could not hook up. I think we have caught all the stupid tuna and only the smart ones are around now. 4 days of looking at fish and could not get them in the boat. But we weren't the only ones, the whole fleet had the same issues. I will post photos later but not many to show. The trip was fun on the Vagabond, as always a great boat great crew and good times with the gang.

It always happens, somebody comes up with a lame excuse not to go on a trip at the last minute. This guy thinks just because he broke his leg he can't go... This wouldn't stop me... Maybe slow me down but not stop. Anyway we need to fill a spot, 4 days of fishing with a great bunch of guys and a great boat. Been on this trip for 5 years and alway catch fish. Well Sat. AM I am calling Big"D" trying to get him to met me at the trackel shop so I can get my broken rod replaced. No answer on the cell on answer at home. I don't hear back from him till Monday AM. Come to find out he went fishing without me..... I guess it was pay back for not going with me on the BD charter. Oh well he goes out on a private boat, a guy he works with and soon realized why he needs to stick to the charter boats. It was just a little rough and it kicked his butt. Recap from Dominator Trip - Another game of Hide And Seek

Well did not do so well on the last trip. Went out with the Bloody Decks Charter on July 6-8th on the Dominator out of Seaforth Landing in San Diego, Ca. Had a good time with the BD guys and 1 gal. Kevan from Noah's Tackel was the charter master and did a great job putting it all together. Food and drinks on the house and Kevan kept everyone up beat dispite the slow bite. There were 25 us on the trip and we only managed 42 fish, I only managed to get 1 on the boat. I did have a few more bites but could not manage to get them on board. The Bloody Decks Guys have a Charter - 2 days on the Dominator out of Seaforth in Mission Bay. It is $440 includes Food and permits. Only 5 guys on it and limit of 25 max. The fish are in the one day range and closer. So it should be a a wide open bite. Contact Noah Tackle or the docks.

Here are the HOT GPS spots for the fish. This was off the 976-tuna site.

*Yellows on kelps too*If you don't get bit, go west until you find the dirty water and then go east until you are back in the clean water. The BFT will pile up there.*Work hard to look for eyeball fish*Stay out of the dirty water if you finf it. Best to look back at the boat wake to see if the water is clean (purple) or dirty, offcolor. You want to work the edge of the dirty water on the clean water side of the break. If you find dirty water, go east until you run out of it. (This water moves around a lot so pay attention)Awesome bluefin tuna fishing here on Friday and it might just hold up to the anticipated boat pressure. The BFT are from 20 to 65 pound so bring some heavy mono like 40 to 60 pound. Awesome day here!

3 Days on the Sea Adventure 80

Took a trip on the Sea Adventure 80, June 14th went out looking for the Tuna Southwest out of San Diego, Ca. USA.

Day one we started out about 70 miles south west of San Diego in perfect water, clean and 64 degrees. Found a few paddies with a few Yellowtails on them. Spent the rest of the day checking empty paddies and trolling with no luck. The water was perfect and there was no reason the fish where hiding.

Day2 - We headed to San Martine Isle and did some Rock fishing and looking for the yellowtail. Found some good high spot just off the isle. But with the red-tide in the area and the water temp all over the chart we moved back off shore for the final day. We did have a nice show of whales in the area and saw plenty of life, just nothing to catch.

Day 3 - started out at grey light and hooked a few Boneheads and Yellows but still could not find the tuna and most of the paddies had nothing on them. But it was still a good trip and the crew of the Sea Adventure did all they could to put us on fish.

The Crew - Terry - Capt. and Scott, Joey, Eagle Eyes and of course Hank (Chef) did a great job and made sure we all caught fish.

Well the tuna finally showed up.... The Royal Star reported the first Albacore of the season this 6/3.. They were a little late showing up this year but they are here now. Let's see how the weekend pans out.

1ST Tuna of 2007 off San Diego

Reports today have the American Angler has put a 20-25lb Bluefin Tuna on the decks on a 1 1/2 day trip out of San Diego, Ca. This is the first reported catch of the 2007 Tuna season. Just in time for the long weekend coming up.

Update on Oarfish

I found this on story on the Baja-Mex fish reort. I was able to contact Barb & Ron Albright who found the fish out in front of there home down in Baja. Here is what Barb reported to me on the find of this rare fish.

One of our friends was walking on the beach he sees this LARGE thing, he is just staying with us. He has no clue what it is but thinks it should be back in the water.. It took him about 5 minutes to get it turned back to sea.
Then we see it, all the neighbors came out at that time. There are only 7 homes here so it wasn't a huge crowd. A couple of the guys got into the inflatable to go out to see what was happening. They could tell it wasn't going to live to long. They jumped into the water with the Oarfish, trying to get it turned back to shore. It took another 15 minutes to get it to shore. They were so gentle with it not wanting to hurt it any more. We figured it was around 150 lbs and about 14 feet long minus a tail that is. The three guys holding it is Troy Tinney, Steve Lawerance, and Mike Shaw.
We contacted Palmas de Cortez to see it they wanted it. They were thrilled to get it, that is where it's at right now. I do know that Scripps had been contacted but not sure what will happen there. They would like to have it but it's here in Baja so that might not happen.
The colors were so fantastic it wasn't like anything I have seen before. It was still alive on shore but you could tell it wasn't going to make it. This we felt was a once in a life time thing, to see something this beautiful coming up from the sea..........

Grande Trip last weekend

Well we went out last weekend on the Grande for a 2 day trip. The plan was to go down south and do some rock cod fishing but with the weather we changed the plan and stayed close to the Coronado Islands for the 2 days. The Yellowtails had made a showing earlier in the week and we tried to work them for the 2 days but it ended up not as wide open as we had hope. I did manage to get a nice one but ended up 2nd in the jackpot. The Boneheads were hitting and we did manage a few rock fish as well but the wind and high swells turned off the bite. Had a good time with 20 guys on the boat and the crew made the best of it. The Grande captain "James" did all he could to put us on fish and the food was great, thanks Nick. I will post pictures of the trip this weekend on my Webshots and add the link as well. Glad to see some Blood Decker's on board as well.

Next trip Planed is June 14th, on the Sea Adventure 80 for a 3 day. Still might have some openings, call H&M to find out.

Last Minute Trip this weekend....

Last Minute Trip was made to go out on the Grande at Point Loma Sportfishing, San Diego, Ca.

My buddy D and I are heading out on a 2 trip Friday night at 8pm and returning Sunday PM. The trip is planned for Colenet for some Rock Cod and then a day of Yellowtail or off-shore for a look for some early Tuna. Contact the docks if you want to go..

Day at the Docks was great, had a good day and toured a lot of boats. Talked with a few captains, swapped stories with a few friends. Most everyone is ready to go fishing and are hoping for a good season.

Vagabond News Flash- New Bathrooms are in the works on board. Talked with Tim and he said they are going to be great. Also talked with Mike and he said he had a few openings that need to get filled on a 2.5 day in May.

Sea Adventure 80 - Chuck is heading out this weekend for a little exploring for tuna. He will be leaving Friday night for a 1.5 day trip. Contact H&M landing to book it. Chuck caught the first Albie last year at this same time. He needs to keep the streak going.

Checked out the Q105 for the first time, looks like a nice boat, very large and sits low to water in the middle. Will see if they have any specials this year, but most of their trips are booked.

Day at the Docks - Point Loma, Ca.

Just to let everyone know, that this Sunday 4/22 is "Day at the Dock" at the Point Loma harbor. This event will have vendors for all of your tackle needs as well as information on fishing and boating. You will be able to tour the fleet of fishing boats and book the upcoming summer fishing season.

This is the west coast largest public celebration of sportfishing. This will be the 28th year for this festival.

Time and Date: 9AM to 5Pm - 4/22 Sunday at the Point Loma - San Diego Sportfishing Landing - Harbor Dr. & Scott St.

FREE - FREE - FREE Admission.

We are pleased to announce the beginning of our 2007 Charter Schedule.
Dates: Leaves Friday April 27 and Returns April 29 , (Sunday morning)
Length of trip: 1 1/2 DaysBoat: DominatorTail Gate Party: Friday April 27th. Seaforth parking lot at 1800 or 6pmDeparture time: 2000 or 8pm
Cost: The cost will be $325.00.
This covers food, drinks (yes beer), fuel surcharge, and permits. It does not cover fish cleaning, jackpot, snacks such as candy, cookies, and chips, or tip. A tee shirt is included.

Destination: Punta ColonetNumber of passengers: 25Target Species: Yellowtail, Reds, Lingcod, Sheepshead, Whitefish, and asst'd other bottom dwellers. We will be targeting the above mentioned species however, there could be a change in plans if the Albies/BFT make a showing between now and then.

We will make the call as we get closer to the departure date.

What to bring: One each of the following...
15#- plastics/bait
20# or 25#- bait/light iron
30#- bait/surface iron
40#- yoyo/dropper loop
That should cover everything you will need for this trip. You may also bring a troller if you want but the boat will have trollers available for your use.

Hello all,

Spring is the time to have all your fishing trips booked.. Well you should have them booked. I have 2 booked already and getting info on 2 more. If you would like to go on a trip or if you have open spots that need to get filled - Low-lifes who backed out on you-, drop me an email and I will help you get on a trip or fill a trip. I also make trips down south to Baja that I can help you out with. There is some great rock fish just down the coast. One my favorite spots is, Castro's Fish Camp. Check out the photos on my links.

Spring Fishing

Well Spring is here and it is time to get your gear in shape for the upcoming summer tuna bite. Get that new line on the reels and tune up the reels and check those guides on the rods. Go through the tackle box and check the hooks and jigs. Here's a few tips to use this season.
1. Put some Baking Powder in the tackle trays with the hooks. It will keep them from rusting.
2. Go to the pet store and get some air hose for the fish tanks. Cut it in 1/2 in. segments and use them as hook protectors for the jigs.
3. Take a piece of 1/2 in. wooded dwole and get 2 tennis balls. cut the tennis balls with an X on opposite sides and use it as a line spool holder.
4. If you need to remove line from your reels, that a water bottle and put a bolt thru the cap, with teh bolt extending out. But the cap back on the bottle and attach it to a drill. Now tie the line to the bottle and use it to wind the line on to the bottle.
5. to make sure your guides are smooth and have no nicks, use a panty hose and run it thru the inside of the guides. If they snag you have nicks that could cut or wear down your line. (Replace the guides)
